Sex dolls and sex robots seem to be a particularly fertile field

 By systematically capturing the current state of academic knowledge about love dolls and sex robots, this scoping review aimed to advance the understanding of sex researchers and practitioners and support their professional engagement in the field of sexual uses of human-like material artifacts.

Mechanization and digitization are fundamental social processes that affect all areas of life, including human sexuality. Male sex dolls and practitioners need to be prepared to deal with these transformations in an informed and professional manner while reflecting on their own knowledge gaps, biases and projections.

Lifelike sex dolls and sex robots appear to be a particularly fertile field of investigation and professional development, as they often evoke very strong emotions that need to be identified, addressed, and challenged with the help of clear conceptualizations, sound theories, and solid empirical evidence.

The idea of ​​using sex dolls for one's sexual pleasure (a basic human need) is already well known in Japan, as some companies rent sex dolls and rooms to customers. Alternatively, a customer can rent a doll for a night or weekend and take it home. Sounds like the person is looking forward to a sex positive evening!

Five clear main themes were identified: 'fascinated/excited', 'more realistic', 'better motor and language skills', 'concerns' and 'not interested'. More than half of the participants were fascinated by robotic technologies as the future of dolls.
